Navigation and Route Finding Course

This course is taught by Dr. Keith Dewing, a geologist with many years of experience route finding and navigating in the wilds of Eastern, Western and Arctic Canada.  It is designed for the day adventurer or group member who recreates in a wilderness setting. The course focuses on reading maps, topographical and aerial, choosing the best routes, and how to use a compass and GPS.  You'll start your day in the classroom and complete the day in the mountains practicing your skills.

Course Length: One Full Day, classroom and practical on trail (map, compass and GPS work)

Course Outline:

MAPS
• Types of map – Which type is right for you.  topographic, shaded relief, air photo
• Scales – What they are and how to use them. Graphic, fraction
• Legend – What features a map shows.
• Contours – How to see landforms from the contour lines
• Co-ordinates and projection – Different types and how to use them.  Latitude and longitude, Universal transverse mercator

CHOOSING A ROUTE
• Sources of information –  guide books and maps
• How long is a route?  Distance, elevation, steepness and estimating the time to walk a route
• Other factors in choosing a route – natural hazards, diversity of terrain and how to tell from a map.
• Bushwhacking – why shortcuts take longer! 

NAVIGATING
• The keys to map reading – using landmarks, waypoints, reading topography, trail signs, and estimating distance.
• Using a compass – true vs. magnetic north, taking a bearing, triangulation.
• Using a GPS – how they work, what they do and don’t tell you.

GEOCACHING
• Learn how to use your GPS to find hidden treasures all over the world!
