SUMMARY:BIG BOOK CLUB: "Upstream" by Mary Oliver + guided walk with Lori
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US!\n\n\n\n\n\nLori is joining forces with the BIG BOOK CLUB as they celebrate the writing of beloved poet Mary Oliver\, reflecting on the wonder of the natural world. What better way to celebrate nature than to go walkabout? Lori will lead a walk after the book club event (see below for more info) \nMore about the event:\n\n\n\n\nSpend your morning in the fierce gentleness of Mary Oliver’s Upstream\, an essay collection that awakens us to language\, nature\, art\, and the quiet urgencies of the heart. \nGuiding us is Kerrie Penney\, who’s spent a lifetime channelling words; as a radio producer\, television host\, narrator\, writer\, director and film maker. Drawing on her rich creative practice—and her deeply personal explorations of mothers and daughters\, grief\, resilience\, and lineage—Kerrie will reflect on how Upstream calls us to listen more closely to the world\, to our inner lives\, and to whatever quiet yearning beckons our attention. This gathering offers space to slow down\, think deeply\, and be refreshed by Oliver’s clear-eyed wisdom and Kerrie’s thoughtful\, generous analysis. You can hear more from Kerrie on her Secret Heart Broadcasting podcast. \nBig Book Club talks are 45-60 minutes with time afterwards for audience questions and discussion. \nBONUS SPRING WALK! \nAfter Kerrie’s book talk\, Lori Beattie\, author of Calgary’s Best Walks\, will lead an optional guided walk to soak up the beauty of springtime in Calgary. We’ll walk along neighborhood side streets\, past little libraries and folk art\, and if time allows\, we’ll celebrate the season with Calgary’s springtime cheerleaders\, the purple headed prairie crocuses on the sunny slopes below River Park. \nIf you wish to walk please keep in mind…\n– This will be a walk to enjoy a Spring day\, chat with people and see some new sights\n– We will walk about 4-5 km in an hour (the walk will be about an hour)\n– There may be uneven terrain\, stairs or a hill\n– Wear good walking footwear for grass or sidewalks\n– Bring layers of clothing to suit to forecast\n– We’ll walk in rain or shine (hopefully not snow but this is Calgary!)\nAs Mary Oliver reminds us\, there is beauty in all seasons and weather. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhen and where:\n\n\n\n\nDate: April 15 at 10 am- 12:30 (if you attend the book club talk and the walk)\nLocation: Marda Loop Community Hall\nCost: $12/TICKET  (link to buy tickets is here and below)

We’ll start in Roxboro and climb through Roxboro Natural Park to stunning views. Up and over McLeod Trail\, we’ll walk through Reader Rock Garden before connecting to Ramsay where variety is the spice of life. Big views from Scotsman’s Hill before we’ll flow with the Elbow River into Mission. \n  \n\nWhere and when:\nMonday\, July 28 at 9:30 am. Meet in Roxboro\, at the corner of 30 Avenue and Roxboro Glen Road\, SW. Free\, no restrictions\, parking on 30 Avenue and side streets and at the tennis courts.\n\nThe event is FULL\, but come anyway\, I won’t take attendance. Historic Calgary Week website. \nDistance and terrain:\nAbout 7 km\, 1.5-2 hours*. \n\n* NOTE: a mix of paved and dirt paths\, stairs and hills\n\n

SUMMARY:FREE JANES WALK! Connecting Elbow River communities on foot with Calgary's Best Walks author\, Lori Beattie
DESCRIPTION:Meet Lori!\nLori has a BRAND NEW guidebook with 95 Walks in Calgary\, Cochrane and beyond! Join her for a free Janes Walk through her favourite neighbourhoods and check out her NEW BOOK\, Calgary’s Best Walks 3rd edition\, with 95 walks including 50 NEW WALKS. \nWhen and where:\nFriday\, May 2 at 1- 2:30 pm – meet on Britannia Drive at 49 Ave SW. All Janes Walks are FREE! REGISTER HERE \nWhat is a “Janes Walk”?\nJane’s Walk is an annual festival of free\, community-led walking conversations inspired by urbanist and writer Jane Jacobs. On the first weekend of May every year\, Jane’s Walk festivals take place in hundreds of cities around the world. This event encourages people to share stories about their neighbourhoods\, discover unseen aspects of their communities\, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours. \nThe Walk: \n\n\nJoin Lori Beattie\, intrepid urban explorer and author of the just released 3rd edition of Calgary’s Best Walks\, and discover how she moves through the city\, connecting communities on foot and searching out the secret paths and hidden stairway connectors whenever she can. From Sandy Beach Park we’ll travel along the Elbow River Pathway\, up the saskatoon slopes to stunning views of the river valley. We’ll navigate Britannia to connector paths that lead to blossoming gardens before we cross the river and find the hidden stairway into into the urban wilds\, followed by stunning downtown views. We’ll walk through Elbow Park to Marda Loop\, past the new shops of 34th Avenue and into Altadore\, where a fairy garden makes you smile\, little libraries beckon\, and a secret path leads to a garden that you’ll want to revisit throughout the summer! This walk is about 6-7 km with hills and a mix of paved path\, sidewalk\, stairs and dirt paths.\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about the book: \nBestselling Alberta author Lori Beattie is back with much expanded 3rd edition of her hugely successful compendium of Calgary’s Best Walks. Taking walkers beyond Calgary\, this edition has 95 walks and tasty pit stops including 50 NEW WALKS that lead walkers throughout Calgary’s parks and neighbourhoods\, west to Cochrane\, and south to Leighton Art Centre and Brown Lowery Provincial Park\, with a section on the Kananaskis and Canmore. \nBring your kids\, your dog and your sense of adventure. Detailed maps lead you through neighbourhoods and pocket parks\, through off leash areas to hidden staircases\, along paved river pathways and onto people-populated walking streets. Navigate side streets\, enjoying homes\, gardens and new perspectives. Make friends with the chickadees on birding strolls throughout the city. Embark on a mural treasure hunt in Sunnyside or the Beltline. Calgary’s Best Walks has something for everyone\, including Lori’s favourite coffee shop suggestions for a postwalk treat.
