SUMMARY:BIG BOOK CLUB: "Upstream" by Mary Oliver + guided walk with Lori
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US!\n\n\n\n\n\nLori is joining forces with the BIG BOOK CLUB as they celebrate the writing of beloved poet Mary Oliver\, reflecting on the wonder of the natural world. What better way to celebrate nature than to go walkabout? Lori will lead a walk after the book club event (see below for more info) \nMore about the event:\n\n\n\n\nSpend your morning in the fierce gentleness of Mary Oliver’s Upstream\, an essay collection that awakens us to language\, nature\, art\, and the quiet urgencies of the heart. \nGuiding us is Kerrie Penney\, who’s spent a lifetime channelling words; as a radio producer\, television host\, narrator\, writer\, director and film maker. Drawing on her rich creative practice—and her deeply personal explorations of mothers and daughters\, grief\, resilience\, and lineage—Kerrie will reflect on how Upstream calls us to listen more closely to the world\, to our inner lives\, and to whatever quiet yearning beckons our attention. This gathering offers space to slow down\, think deeply\, and be refreshed by Oliver’s clear-eyed wisdom and Kerrie’s thoughtful\, generous analysis. You can hear more from Kerrie on her Secret Heart Broadcasting podcast. \nBig Book Club talks are 45-60 minutes with time afterwards for audience questions and discussion. \nBONUS SPRING WALK! \nAfter Kerrie’s book talk\, Lori Beattie\, author of Calgary’s Best Walks\, will lead an optional guided walk to soak up the beauty of springtime in Calgary. We’ll walk along neighborhood side streets\, past little libraries and folk art\, and if time allows\, we’ll celebrate the season with Calgary’s springtime cheerleaders\, the purple headed prairie crocuses on the sunny slopes below River Park. \nIf you wish to walk please keep in mind…\n– This will be a walk to enjoy a Spring day\, chat with people and see some new sights\n– We will walk about 4-5 km in an hour (the walk will be about an hour)\n– There may be uneven terrain\, stairs or a hill\n– Wear good walking footwear for grass or sidewalks\n– Bring layers of clothing to suit to forecast\n– We’ll walk in rain or shine (hopefully not snow but this is Calgary!)\nAs Mary Oliver reminds us\, there is beauty in all seasons and weather. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhen and where:\n\n\n\n\nDate: April 15 at 10 am- 12:30 (if you attend the book club talk and the walk)\nLocation: Marda Loop Community Hall\nCost: $12/TICKET  (link to buy tickets is here and below)

SUMMARY:FREE JANES WALK! Folk art\, hidden stairways\, big views\, and the urban wilds: Connecting Ramsay and Inglewood
DESCRIPTION:Walk with Lori!\nCelebrate the joy of walking with Lori Beattie\, intrepid urban explorer and author of Calgary’s Best Walks. Discover how Lori moves through the city\, connecting communities on foot and searching out folk art\, little libraries\, big views\, hidden stairways and conversations.\n\n\nWhat is a “Janes Walk”?\nJane’s Walk is an annual festival of free\, community-led walking conversations inspired by urbanist and writer Jane Jacobs. On the first weekend of May every year\, Jane’s Walk festivals take place in hundreds of cities around the world. This event encourages people to share stories about their neighbourhoods\, discover unseen aspects of their communities\, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours. \n\n\n\nLori’s Janes Walk description\nWe’ll travel along the Bow River Pathway and onto the side streets of the colourful and eclectic Inglewood and Ramsay. Murals\, little libraries and my pups favourite dog treat library are all part of the walk as we make up way to the top of Scotsman’s Hill. We’ll soak up the views before descending to the Elbow River Pathway. A walk north along the river path leads us to the Confluence\, where the Elbow and Bow Rivers meet. If timing allows\, we’ll walk through St. Patrick’s Island or we’ll take Inglewood side streets back to our starting point. Walkers are welcome to break away from the pack to soak up the people-populated 9th Avenue. It is the perfect street to head to if you need to replenish lost calories with a tasty and refreshing pick me up (coffee\, ice cream\, beer)!\n\nMore details and registration:\nFriday\, May 1 at 1- 3 pm: The walk will be about 7.5 km with hills\, stairs and uneven terrain. All Janes Walks are FREE! REGISTER HERE \n
