SHELF LIFE BOOKS- Writing Calgary Event- creation, publishing and distribution

Join local authors Lori Beattie, Kevin Allen, Charles Agopsowicz and moderator Jim Ellis and learn all about the writing, publishing and distribution of local interest books and zines. Each panelist will chat about their publications and how they took them from concept to bookstore placement.

More about the panelists:

Lori Beattie: Since 2002 Lori has been writing and publishing best-selling guidebooks. In 2025 Lori published a much expanded 3rd edition of her hugely successful compendium of Calgary’s Best Walks. She is also the author of Calgary’s Best Bike Rides.

Kevin Allen Author of Our Past Matters: Stories of Gay Calgary; The book is part of a larger project that has achieved national recognition and led to a series of award-winning documentary films, maps, essays, walking tours.

Charles Agopsowicz: A graphic designer, illustrator and comic/zine creator. Check out his zines here: https://store.withthesetwohands.com/ 

Jim Ellis: Jim wears many hats as the director of the U of C Institute of Humanities and U of C professor of English as well as the author numerous essays and books, including most recently The Poem, the Garden and the World: Poetry and Performativity in Elizabethan England (Northwestern UP, 2023).
